EVENTS OF THE MONTH - JANUARY 2011

ZEPHYR '11

Delhi Public School Newtown celebrated its Annual Carnival “Zephyr’11” on 8th & 9th January 2011. The event was held on the school grounds. The Social Service Club chose this day to donate 200 blankets to the “Baikunthapur Tarun Sangha”, an NGO working with the under privileged in the remote regions of the Sunderbans. The “Aila” last year, had ravaged their homes, their livelihood and scarred their lives and this was a small attempt on our part to reach out to them.

Students from all classes actively participated in the Carnival. There were stalls put up by students from classes Nursery to XI. There were many rides such as Columbus, Toy Train, Break Dance, Bouncing Castle and many more which were the star attractions. There were exciting and innovative games stalls at the venue and also others that offered Face Painting, Mehendi, Hair Braiding and other exciting options for the visitors.

Various stage events simultaneously took place such as the Poor Joke Competition, The Duo Dance, The Fancy Dress Competition along with crowning the  Zephyr Prince and Princess 2011. A Magic Show and a performance by the School band made the day memorable for all.

The crowning glory of the Carnival was the Lucky Draw for Parents and Teachers with many exciting gifts to be won. What made this day very special was the fact that all the proceeds from the Carnival and funds generated would be used by the school for charitable purposes to help make the students more sensitive to the plight of those less fortunate than them.

The carnival at DPS Newtown gave the students a welcome break from the routine of books and classroom and also gave them several memorable moments to cherish for a life time.

CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION - 12.1.11

Most of the children want to write before they want to read.

There is something magical about putting pen to paper and making words appear. Children love to share their personal thoughts through pen and paper .
But when inspiration doesn't strike and we hear "I don't know what to write!!!", that is when we need to find some creative writing ideas for kids. The desire to inspire our children to grow as a writer, must lighten a fire in their youth .

We cannot expect a child to love writing without developing the love for the same.

We must nurture and immerse the child in good, redemptive learning and guide them to the joys of the creative process. Not introducing them to "creative writing" until high school, will be missing out on the wonderful years of fresh and vibrant creativity that younger children possess!
In class II we inspired children to pen down their thoughts very often , we provide them the opportunity among the busy schedule of completion of syllabus, to talk and express. The more they speak out on a topic , they learn to frame sentences , which in the long run helps in their writing skills.

We discussed a topic “We care for animals “ in class and told the children to practice to write a few lines on the same topic.
On 12.1.11 , the children were fully excited to write on their own creation. They wrote with enthusiasm and were happy to do the same. We must encourage
children to write more and more from an early age with different activities on creative writing for kids.
